Vikash Ramnanan, a senior psychology major/philosophy minor at Angelo State University, was selected as a program presenter and was awarded two scholarships at the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society’s annual convention held April 6-8 in Louisville, Ky.

Research projects presented at the convention by students from across the U.S. were grouped by academic discipline and adjudicated by faculty advisors. Thirty presentation prizes recognizing outstanding research and creative entries were awarded, with the winning students then presenting their work to the entire convention.

Ramnanan won a presentation prize in the Research Presentation contest for his project titled “Enclothed Cognition and How Our Self-Perception Affects Our Cognitive and Emotional States.” His ASU faculty research mentor is Dr. Crystal Kreitler, associate professor of psychology, and his project was funded by an ASU Faculty-Mentored Research Grant.

Based on his convention presentation and academic standing, Ramnanan also received an Alpha Chi Region I Scholarship of $1,000 and the ASU Alpha Chi Iota Chapter Scholarship of $250.

An international student from Trinidad, Ramnanan is a member of the ASU Honors Program and has also presented research at a Great Plains Honors Council Conference. He is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society, the ASU psychology program’s Cognitive Lab, and the ASU Psych Club student organization. He also serves on the board of the West Texas Community Reinvesting in Educational Opportunities (CREO) nonprofit organization.

Alpha Chi is open to college and university juniors, seniors and graduate students majoring in any academic discipline and has over 300 chapters nationwide with more than 400,000 members. To be eligible, students must rank in the top 10 percent of their class. More details are available at www.alphachihonor.org.
