In West Texas when hit storms hit they tend to bring some hail damage and the shady repair scams.

The Storm Was Bad—The Scammers Are Worse

West Texas home and vehicle owners are still assessing the damage left behind by recent hailstorms, but a second storm is brewing, this time, from dishonest contractors and scam artists. According to the Better Business Bureau of Abilene, residents should be extra cautious when hiring repair services after a weather disaster.

They Knocked on My Door

Five days after the last hailstorm, two men showed up at my house offering to climb up on my roof and give me a “special deal.” But because I know John Riggins personally, I knew these guys were what Riggins is always warning us about. John is the Director of the Abilene Better Business Bureau (BBB), and I already work with a trusted, local home builder. So, I told them “Thanks, but no thanks.” Not everyone is so lucky.

On a side note,  I wanted to ask them what grade in elementary school did they drop out of, because the two men knocking on my door who were soliciting to work on my roof, either could not read or did not understand the words because on my front door, there's a sign that says, "No Soliciting" Nuff said.

A Warning from the Better Business Bureau

John Riggins and the BBB have issued an alert: “Beware.” These so-called contractors often show up with big promises, asking for large cash deposits or trying to pressure you into quick decisions. Some will do a poor job, others will take off with your money and never return.

“Enduring the hail storm is enough,” said John Riggins. “You don’t need to add getting poor repairs to your home or vehicle to your storm story.”

Before You Sign Anything, Remember This:

  • A good deal today should still be good tomorrow.
  • Never pay a large cash deposit up front.
  • Always check online reviews and credentials.
  • Get at least three quotes.
  • Ask: will this company be around later if problems pop up?
  • At the very least contact the BBB to learn more
