A historic Texas swimming pool will remain closed for the third year in a row as renovations continue to the dismay of many locals.

Texas Swimming Pool Closed...Again

As someone who grew up swimming in that cold, clear water, doing cannonballs, and hanging with friends and family, this definitely hits close to home. The pool at Abilene State Park will stay closed this summer as major renovations continue.

The park superintendent, Craig Simpson, said, “We understand how unfortunate the delay is to our visitors, but we want to ensure the pool is fixed for good, not just for now.”

While I do agree that it should be fixed for good, my question is why it is taking three years, or more, to complete? I get it, it’s not just about this summer, it’s about future generations being able to enjoy the same special place we did when we were kids. But, three years? This is like the Buffalo Gap Road expansion all over again. I digress.

Historic Texas Pool At Abilene State Park

This pool is not just any pool. Built in the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it’s part of Abilene’s story and has become a gathering place for families since the park opened on May 10, 1934. Though it switched from spring-fed to city water in the '80s, it never lost its charm.

While it is tough to lose this historic pool once again, there’s still plenty to do out at Abilene State Park. You can take the kids out for a hike or bike ride, do some birdwatching, try your hand at geocaching, or just enjoy the peace and quiet under those big ol’ trees.

I really hope we don't have to wait another three years. But, I guess in the time it's taking to be done, it's going to be done right.

Fortunately, there are many other pools in the Texas to check out.
