Harker Heights Is Experimenting With a 4 Day Work Week
Harker Heights administrative city staff and services will begin a six-month trial of a four-day work week beginning October 6th. This does not mean they will work less each week. Instead of five eight-hour days, employees will work four 10-hour days. The daily schedule will change from 8a to 5p to 7a to 6p. Emergency services staff will continue to work five days a week.
Why Is Harker Heights Making the Change?
According to KWTX, Harker Heights Mayor, Michael Blomquist decided to change up the workday schedule due to an increase of residents needing city services earlier and later in the day outside of business hours. The workday change is also attracting potential employees who favor a shorter work week.
Not Everyone Agrees with the Schedule Change in Harker Heights
While employees may like the idea of only working four days, some businesses that work with the city have problems with the plan. Solar CenTex owner Scot Arey told KWTX that because his business works with city inspectors, his ability to work on Fridays may be affected.
The Mayor of Harker Heights Says the City Will Work with Local Businesses
Mayor Blomquist told KWTX that the city is willing to work with businesses to ensure their operations are not disrupted. Blomquist is encouraging both business owners and residents to let city officials know what they think about the schedule change during city council meetings.
