An investigation into political extremism in Texas universities is underway. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows are creating a select committee following the murder of Charlie Kirk to determine if political extremism is present within the state university system.

31 Year old Charlie Kirk was assassinated Wednesday, September 10th while speaking to a crowd of college students at Utah Valley University (UVU). Kirk was answering a question about transgender mass shooters when he was shot in the neck.
Response to the Charlie Kirk Assassination
Charlie Kirk’s death shocked the world with millions grieving with Kirk’s family. At the same time, the murder has led to a disturbing amount of people celebrating Kirk’s death online. Many of those making the vile comments work in areas of public service including teachers, nurses, judges, military members and police officers.
The House and Senate Select Committee on Civil Discourse and Freedom of Speech in Higher Education
The House and Senate Select Committee on Civil Discourse and Freedom of Speech in Higher Education will be chaired by Republican state Rep. Terry Wilson and Republican state Sen. Paul Bettencourt. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Speaker Dustin Burrows announced the formation of the committee in a press release that was shared on X.
Patrick and Burrows select committee announcements also reference Senate Bill (SB) 37 and SB 2972. Each bill is related to content oversight at Texas public universities.
