Update: Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt has addressed the controversy surrounding Matt Wells, Torrey Green and Utah State University. [Read more]

Original story: Earlier this week, The Daily Beast chronicled the details of the multiple sexual assaults and rapes that former Utah State football player Torrey Green has been accused and/or convicted of.

In March 2019, Green was sentenced on five rape charges and one count of sexual battery. His sentence was 26 years to life in prison.

Green was a linebacker for Utah State from 2011 to 2015. The first allegation of rape made against him was in October 2014, according to The Daily Beast.

Current Texas Tech Football head coach Matt Wells was the head coach at Utah State from 2013-2018. In August 2016, Wells spoke to the media in Logan, Utah about the then-allegations against Green.

Wells, who has dismissed high-profile players from the team for misconduct in the past, said he wasn’t aware about the accusations until about a week ago.

“What you know is what I know,” he said. “I don’t know much more. They were all news to me very, very recently.”

However, earlier today (November 8th, 2019), in a statement released from Texas Tech Athletics to KAMC-TV's David Collier, a different point in time was referenced by Wells.

Wells, in his statement released by Texas Tech, said that in January 2016 he was asked to meet with a Utah State Associate Vice President for Student Affairs to discuss an allegation against Green.

Between Wells' statement to the media in Logan, Utah in August 2016 and Wells' statement in Lubbock, Texas on November 8th, 2019, there's an approximate difference of seven-plus months concerning his admitted knowledge of the allegations against Green. That difference would be: knowledge of the allegations against Green in either January 2016, or knowledge in late July/early August 2016, as he told the media in Logan, Utah in August 2016.

Texas Tech Senior Associate Athletics Director Robert Giovannetti backed up Wells' statement of having knowledge of the Green allegations in January 2016 in a series of posts on the RedRaiderSports.com Inside The Double T message board, which is a paid subscription message board.

In a thread titled, Matt Wells statement, Giovannetti, posting under the screen name 'Robert G The Robfather' (and with a photo of himself in the avatar), said: "He was made aware a month after the kid had played his final game."

Giovannetti also said in reference to Texas Tech's statement, "it (sic) is in the statement. The meeting was in January 2016, Green's last game was in December 2015."
