Some years teams can go through an entire baseball season with zero injuries. It's rare in baseball, but I've heard of it happening. In some far off distant land though because it certainly hasn't happened for Texas Tech in recent seasons, and this season seems like the floodgates have opened on injuries.

In the preseason, two major pitching pieces had season-ending injuries when Hunter Dobbins and Jakob Brustoski went down. Just last weekend, Brandon Birdsell was pulled off of the mound with a shoulder injury which was later revealed as a rotator cuff issue which will cost him significant time.

Now, if it wasn't enough to lose major arms, major bats have been affected.

Both Big 12 preseason player of the year Dylan Neuse and Kurt Wilson will be out according to a report from d1baseball's Kendall Rogers.

Dru Baker has also been dealing with an injury to the lower body, but by all accounts is scheduled to be back soon. Neuse's injury will likely end his season while Kurt Wilson's will keep him out for at least six weeks. Depending on when that timetable started, Wilson could be back for the final series of the season against Kansas.

For now, until Baker comes back, the outfield will be Dillon Carter in center replacing Neuse, with Easton Murrell and Max Marusak on the corners. Wilson had been playing mostly left field and third base, but the defense of Parker Kelly has been a major part of the decision to move Wilson into the outfield.

On one hand, Texas Tech started this season as one of the deepest in the country. On the other hand, that was seven injuries ago.

Up next for the Red Raiders is a series against West Virginia in Morgantown. The Mountaineers are 13-14 on the season with Big 12 series losses to Oklahoma State and Baylor and a series win over Kansas for a 4-5 record overall in conference play.
