Titled “The Machine Awakes,” the concert will feature ASU student musicians on clarinet, tenor and alto saxophone, flute, piccolo, horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba and various percussion instruments.

Musical selections will include “Orion” by Jan Van Der Roost, “Lightning Fields” by John Mackey, “Korean Folk Rhapsody” and “Nathan Hale Trilogy” by James Curnow, “Snakes!” by Thomas C. Duffy, “The Machine Awakes” for band and electronics by Steven Bryant, Michael Brown’s arrangement of “UP” by Michael Giacchino, and Paul Murtha’s arrangement of Giacchino’s “Incredibles.”

The ASU Symphonic Band is directed by Trent Shuey, ASU assistant director of bands. It is comprised of music majors on primary and secondary instruments, as well as ASU students not majoring in music, with no audition required to participate. The band provides an educational experience and serves as a musical outlet for students who wish to remain musically active in a less intense setting. The literature selected in this ensemble consists of a wide range of difficulty levels and is selected, in part, to provide music education students resources that can be used upon entering the profession – much like a “music education band literature course.”
