The honorees were recognized during an awards ceremony March 6 on campus. The President’s Awards for Staff Excellence recipients were selected from 51 nominees, and the Chancellor’s Colonel Rowan Award honoree was chosen from 10 nominees. The four Staff Excellence Awards recipients each received a $1,000 honorarium and a presentation piece, while the Rowan Award winner received a $1,500 honorarium.

Tom Nurre Jr., a news and information specialist in the Office of Communications and Marketing, received the President’s Award for Commitment to Excellence. As a proud ASU alumnus, Nurre ensures that everyone we reach is able to see that ASU is an outstanding university with exceptional faculty and staff who provide quality education and a complete college experience. In addition to hundreds of news releases every year, he produces numerous website features that act as indirect recruiting messages on the ASU website homepage. He also writes a monthly column in the San Angelo Standard-Times to highlight outstanding campus programs and people, and he writes or edits the vast majority of the university’s printed materials and publications.

Drexene Winey, office coordinator in the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Social Work, received the President’s Award for Excellence in Customer Service. Winey consistently exudes a warm welcome, inviting presence, genuine smile and feelings of belongingness to those around her. Winey does many things to assist students, which are not required of her, because she deeply desires to help. For example, she has assisted Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, with various tasks such as getting shirts to its members. She creates entirely new standards in customer service.

Andrea Robledo, outreach coordinator and academic advisor in the David L. Hirschfeld Department of Engineering, received the President’s Award for Excellence in Innovation. Robledo meets students where they are by hosting advising hours in the Plaza Verde residence hall clubhouse. This gives students the option to meet with her just outside their doors and greatly improves the effectiveness of the engineering advising program. Robledo quickly recognized common goals between the engineering program and the San Angelo Workforce Board. Her participation on the Youth Advisory Committee? has allowed her to share Workforce Board training opportunities with other ASU advisors.

Michelle Norris received the President’s Award for Excellence in Leadership. Norris has been a dedicated employee with ASU for 16 years. Her well-rounded experience and a wealth of knowledge is recognized university wide, and she is often acknowledged as the “go-to” person for questions or explanations related to student billing, financial aid, scholarships, and a variety of student-related issues. As a student-centered leader, she looks at each student’s situation as an opportunity to educate and empower the student. As a dedicated college administrator, she places the ethical use of donor contributions as a priority and stresses the importance of gift aid to the students.

Sharla Adam, director of admissions in the Office of Admissions, earned the Chancellor’s Colonel Rowan Award, which annually recognizes a staff member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in carrying out a major project during the last academic year. Adam played a major role in all of the records set by fall 2016 enrollment at ASU. This included the largest new freshman class ever at 1,583 students, up 17 percent, and the largest overall enrollment of 9,581 students. As well, she led a small group of dedicated employees quietly, efficiently and autonomously in meeting the objective to implement an off-site dual credit program that now boasts enrollment of more than 2,300 students. Adam’s passion for ASU shows in everything she does. It is contagious and spreads to those she comes in contact with.
