The Los Angeles Chargers have fired head coach Anthony Lynn after a 7-9 season. The move was reported by Adam Schefter and confirmed by the team in a statement from owner Dean Spanos on January 4th, 2021.

"As we all know, this is a results-driven business and, simply put, the results of the past two years have fallen short of expectations. The search for a new head coach will begin immediately," Spanos said.

Lynn, a former Texas Tech running back, had a winning record as the head coach of the Chargers. The team has a talented roster coming back together in 2021, with a 2nd-year coming back with NFL experience. In short, the Chargers have rebuilt well after a 12-4 season in 2018 and are poised to be successful next season.

Lynn finished his Chargers tenure with a 33-31 record and a playoff win in their only appearance back in the 2018 season. Since that playoff win, however, the Chargers went 12-20 with blown losses and baffling time management plaguing the ex-head coach.

The Chargers also dealt with a running back abandoning the team last season and devastating injuries on defense in both seasons. Lynn is widely respected across the NFL and will likely land on his feet with another team.

Additionally, an interesting situation could transpire with Eric Bieniemy being the leading candidate for the Chargers' newly vacant head coach job.

Bieniemy is currently the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, which would leave that job open. Lynn is absolutely qualified for that job after being the OC for the Buffalo Bills prior to his time with the Chargers.

Lynn could also be in line for a number of head coaching gigs that are available in the NFL, including the New York Jets, where he was the running back's coach and assistant head coach from 2009 to 2014. Lynn was also an assistant coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars early in his career.
