WEATHERFORD, Texas (AP) — Deputies have shot and killed an armed fugitive during a North Texas standoff as he faced returning to prison.
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler says Winford Watkins was shot early Tuesday after pointing a gun at deputies. Watkins was in a rural home near Weatherford, about 20 miles west of Fort Worth.

Three deputies will be put on administrative leave. Texas Rangers will help investigate.

Watkins recently failed to appear in court when he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for burglary of a habitation and felony theft.

A deputy Monday afternoon pulled over Watkins during a traffic stop and noticed a gun in the vehicle before the suspect drove away. Deputies converged on the home Monday night.

Watkins served time for drug possession, burglary and credit card abuse.
