ASU Artist Lecture on Monday, Sept. 23rd

Angelo State University’s inaugural Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art will feature speaker Sharon Booma, a nationally known contemporary painter, on Monday, Sept. 23, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.
Booma’s presentation, titled “Beyond the Obvious,” will begin at 3 p.m. in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center, and is open free to the public.  In conjunction with the lectureship, an exhibit of her work will be on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Gallery 193 in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive.  Booma will also present a gallery talk at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Gallery 193.  Both the exhibit and gallery talk are also open free to the public.

Educated at the College of New Rochelle in New York and the University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts, Booma has been exhibiting her work since 1986.  Her complex, abstract paintings, characterized by a vigorous pursuit of a balance between the states of chaos and order, have been awarded top prizes in juried exhibits and have been viewed in numerous invitational exhibitions nationally and internationally.

The new Henry Edwards Distinguished Lectureship in Art is an outgrowth of the Edwards Family Trust, established in 1992 by Joseph Henry Edwards and Winona Edwards of San Angelo to provide funding for the art program in ASU’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts.  In addition to the new lectureship, the Edwards Family Trust supports scholarships for outstanding visual art students and an artist residency program.
