This week, communities across the state of Texas will recognize Chamber of Commerce Week.  Chambers of Commerce are business associations that work to improve the economic, cultural and overall business climate of the areas they serve.  They are typically governed by a volunteer board of directors and employ a professional staff to accomplish their mission.
“At the heart of the local economy and the backbone of virtually every great community, you’ll find a chamber of commerce celebrating and promoting the diversity and uniqueness of their community,” said Aaron Cox, CEO of the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Association.  “Their efforts result in business attraction, job creation, improved educational opportunities, beautification, and much more.”

Today’s chambers of commerce focus on a broad range of activities and support for both business and the community at large.  From community and workforce development initiatives to information dissemination and legislative advocacy, chamber professionals and members work with other talented leaders in business, community and government to create a positive environment and to make the community a better place in which to live and work.  “The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce has 1,100 business members with over 1,500 individuals representing those businesses,” said President Phil Neighbors.  “Our members and volunteers are directly responsible for the success we have experienced in our organization.”

In addition to being recognized with multiple awards from the Texas Chamber of Commerce, the San Angelo Chamber has been awarded accreditation from the United States Chamber, most recently a 4-star accreditation status.  “As one of only 20 accredited chambers in Texas, this is something to be very proud of,” said Ali Ehrlich, Director of Operations, Political Affairs and Federation Relations, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.   “Being an Accredited chamber is a significant accomplishment that validates a Chamber’s commitment to organizational excellence,” she said.  Of the nearly 7,000 chambers of commerce nationwide, only about 800 have received accreditation status.

The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce is located in the Visitor Center at 418 West Avenue B.  More information about their programs and services may be found on their website, www.sanangelo.org.
