CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Drivers for a South Texas transit group that moves 5 million customers annually have been banned from using any of their electronic devices while working.
Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority drivers who don't switch off their cellphones, MP3s and Bluetooth headsets could be fired.

Operations manager Rosa Villarreal says it's about creating a safer work environment.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times (http://bit.ly/1cZ5bXu ) on Monday reported on the new zero-tolerance policy for bus and ferry operators. Drivers can use the devices during emergencies or when they're stopped at the end of their line — but must exit the vehicle.

Drivers have been barred from using their cellphones since 2000. The new policy bans all mobile devices.

The CCRTA provides public transportation for Corpus Christi and more than half a dozen nearby cities.
