Darvin Ham Finally Gets the Shot He Deserves
I wrote last week that Red Raider legend Darvin Ham was long overdue for a head coaching gig in the NBA.
The Los Angeles Lakers have made that dream for Ham, a reality.
Ham broke into the coaching business by starting as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, then the Atlanta Hawks, and then became the lead assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Now he returns to the Los Angeles Lakers who have a complicated roster that Ham will take over.
A lot has been said by Red Raiders fans this week about not wanting Ham to have to coach LeBron James. To that I say, the Los Angeles Lakers job is one of those jobs in sports you don't turn down. No matter what. The Lakers' history and legacy is unmatched in the NBA by most of the league and when the Lakers are great, nobody can match the intrigue.
Ham will have his work cut out for him to navigate the egos of the elderly roster of the Lakers, but that's part of why Ham was chosen as the coach. LeBron James is obviously part of the Lakers roster currently, Ham and James have met before. Here they are back in 2004 when Ham was with the Pistons, as a player.
For what it's worth, James is excited about the addition of Ham to the organization.
Ham replaces Frank Vogel who coached the Lakers to a disappointing season last year and was fired by the organization in April.
