El Paso Man Convicted in Police Officer’s Death

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A man accused of causing a crash that killed an El Paso police officer in 2010 has been convicted of manslaughter, aggravated assault and driving while intoxicated.
Alejandro Fierro was convicted Thursday. The sentencing phase of his trial is set to begin Friday morning. The 21-year-old faces two to 20 years in prison for each manslaughter and aggravated assault charge, and up to 180 days in jail for the DWI charge. He is eligible for probation.

The El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/18o8WjV ) reports that prosecutors said Fierro was driving drunk when he crashed into a patrol car driven by Officer Ricardo Lopez at an intersection. Lopez's partner and passenger, Officer Karl McDonough, died at the scene.
