HOUSTON (AP) — Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier (luh-NEER') has been remembered as a dedicated city leader and a lover of his family, music and sports.

Services were held Tuesday in Houston for Lanier, who died Saturday of natural causes. He was 89.

Hundreds of people turned out to remember the civic leader known affectionately as "Mayor Bob." Lanier led Houston during the 1990s.

Pastor Joel Osteen of megachurch Lakewood Church urged mourners to make the world a better place, like Lanier did.
