Former Wounded DPS Trooper Gets an Early Christmas Surprise
News 10 is reporting that a Former Central Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper was given an early Christmas gift on Tuesday.
Daniel Shown was wounded in a shootout nearly 30 years ago.
"I was shocked the night that I got hurt, but I'm extremely shocked that my trooper friends have stood beside me all of these many, many years," said Shown.
On Tuesday, Members of 100 Club Heart of Texas, gave Shown a new electric wheelchair during the DPS Retiree Association’s Christmas luncheon.
Shown's old wheelchair was falling apart and was not going to last much longer.
The club members also found a van that will be outfitted to hold the wheelchair and help Shown get in and out of the vehicle.
When we learned of Daniel's need, our board thought that was exactly in our mission and so we did what we could to make the chair possible,” said Sandy Pechacek, the club’s executive director.
KTWX said, "Shown was shot in the center of his forehead eight days before Christmas in 1988 while assisting McLennan County deputies with a barricaded suspect on a rural road near West."
