TYLER, Texas (AP) — Officials say a man accused of carjacking a motorist and stealing a sheriff's office sport utility vehicle in East Texas was shot to death by authorities in Southeast Texas after brandishing a firearm and trying to run over officers while attempting to flee.

Smith County Sherriff Larry Smith tells the Tyler Morning Telegraph (http://bit.ly/1Lclwue ) 29-year-old Jeffrey Eugene Brooks of Palestine tried to flee Sunday after authorities surrounded a home in Clute.

Sheriff's officials had been searching for Brooks since Thursday. Brooks, wanted on an aggravated assault warrant, led deputies who tried to stop him on a high-speed chase into Tyler. He eventually ditched his vehicle, carjacked a man, wrecked that car and took a sheriff's sport utility vehicle. He then wrecked the sheriff's unit, stole another vehicle and lost officers.
