Certain events in Abilene feel special, and Zoolute at the Abilene Zoo is one of them.

On Saturday, May 16, active-duty military, veterans, retired military members, and their families are invited to enjoy a free day at the zoo from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during this annual Memorial Day weekend tradition.

The Abilene Zoo, located at Grover Nelson Park, will offer free admission to military families with proof of service. Organizers say the event will take place rain or shine.

Why This Event Means So Much

Anyone who listens to my radio shows knows how much I love and support our military families. Truth be told, I always wanted to serve in the military myself, but because I was born without my left arm due to a birth defect, I was never allowed to enlist, even after trying several times.

That’s probably one reason events like this touch my heart so deeply.

My dad served during the Korean War and Vietnam, two of my sons have served in the military, and many members of my family proudly wore our nation’s uniform. Around here, military service is more than a job. It’s family, sacrifice, honor, and love of country.

Family Fun Meets Military Appreciation

Throughout the day, families can enjoy keeper chats, animal encounters, and activities spread across the zoo grounds. Guests are encouraged to bring cameras because some of the animal encounters could create memories your family will never forget.

A free lunch and snack will be provided by HEB beginning at 11:30 a.m. Military families may also want to arrive early because commemorative engraved bricks for the zoo’s future Honor Walk will be available in limited supply.

Honoring Dyess and Abilene’s Future

One of the most exciting parts of the zoo’s future expansion project, known as “A Bold Adventure,” will include the installation of a C-130 Hercules aircraft near a new lion habitat honoring Dyess Air Force Base and the military families who helped shape Abilene for generations.

And honestly, I can’t think of a more fitting tribute during Memorial Day weekend, a time when we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for America.

The Abilene Zoo continues to grow into one of the biggest family attractions in West Texas, and this event is another reminder of why so many families love it.
