There are plenty of reasons to head to Buffalo Gap on Labor Day weekend, but one means more than all the chili, brisket, and barbecue combined. The 44th Annual Ben Richey Chili Super Bowl & BBQ Cookoff returns September 5-6 at the Old Settlers Grounds in Buffalo Gap, and once again, it's all about helping the boys and families served by the Ben Richey Boys Ranch & Family Program.

The Chili Super Bowl began in 1982 when a group of Abilene businessmen learned about the needs of the Boys Ranch and decided to do something about it.

They knew how to cook chili, so they turned that talent into a fundraiser.

More than four decades later, the Chili Super Bowl Board has donated more than $2 million to the Ben Richey Boys Ranch & Family Program.

That's what makes this event so special. The trophies and bragging rights are fun, but helping provide a safe home, food, clothing, guidance and opportunities for young people is what really matters.

Two Days of Chili, BBQ and Big Country Fun

Competition gets underway throughout Labor Day weekend with cooks battling in categories including chili, brisket, ribs, chicken, beans and more.

You'll also find the famous World's Largest Chili Pot, People’s Choice judging, vendor booths, raffles, a live auction and plenty of incredible food.

Saturday evening also includes the traditional dance and live entertainment.

I've been involved with this event in one way or another since its early years, and what has always impressed me most isn't who wins the cook-off. It's watching people from throughout Abilene and the Big Country come together year after year for the boys.

Come Hungry and Help the Ben Richey Boys Ranch

The 2026 Chili Super Bowl & BBQ Cook-Off is Saturday and Sunday, September 5-6, at the Old Settlers Grounds in Buffalo Gap.

Admission is free for all ages, although donations are encouraged.

Come hungry, enjoy some outstanding Texas cooking, bid on something at the auction, and remember why everyone is there.

It's about helping kids and families who need a hand, and that's something West Texas has always known how to do.
