Here in West Texas, military pride runs deep. Between families connected to Dyess Air Force Base and generations of veterans who served this country, holidays like Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day mean a whole lot more than just another long weekend.

For my family, they also bring back memories around the dinner table.

First Base: Dad Loved Cracker Barrel

If Dad had the first pick, there was a good chance we were heading to Cracker Barrel.

His toughest decision was usually the chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken, or his favorite, the famous meatloaf. Add in sweet tea and good conversation, and Dad was a very happy man.

Second Base: Mom Wanted Golden Corral

Now, if Mom had anything to say about it, we were probably going to Golden Corral. She loved the comfort food, the desserts, and getting the whole family around one table. Looking back, it really was never just about the food. It was about family, laughter, and making memories together.

Third Base: Texas Roadhouse Was Always A Winner

Coming in strong for Dad was Texas Roadhouse. Dad loved a good ribeye, or a t-bone, and Texas Roadhouse was one of his favorites. Although every now and then he’d grin and remind everyone that the best steaks in West Texas came off my backyard grill, cooked by me. Truth is, hearing that from Dad meant more to me than he probably ever knew.

Home Run: Remember What These Holidays Are Really About

As Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day approach, let’s remember the men and women who served, sacrificed, and gave everything for this country.

Maybe one of the best ways to honor them is the Texas way: gather around the table, share a meal with family, thank a veteran, and never forget the freedoms we enjoy because of their sacrifice.

If you still have Mom or Dad around, maybe take them out to eat while you still can.And a big thank you to all our military and veterans. God bless you all.
