EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The mayor of El Paso has vetoed a proposed $903 million city budget to oppose a planned tax increase.

Mayor Oscar Leeser's veto came after the El Paso City Council on Tuesday adopted the fiscal 2017 spending plan, which is $58 million higher than the current year.

Records show it's the first time an El Paso mayor vetoed the budget since 1991.

Council members can let the veto stand or override it — allowing the new budget to proceed. If the veto stands, council members would need to approve a resolution to continue the current budget.

The proposed budget would add about $56 to El Paso's portion of a property tax bill on the average home. The measure includes pay increases for firefighters as approved by voters in 2015.
