PHARR, Texas (AP) — A Rio Grande Valley man fleeing from police who had pulled him over for a traffic stop has been killed when his SUV wrecked.

Authorities say 21-year-old Aaron Prado, of Donna, sped off after he was stopped by officers early Saturday in Pharr. He wound up slamming into a concrete pillar, ejecting him from his Lincoln Navigator.

Pharr police tell the McAllen newspaper The Monitor (http://bit.ly/1xaiCPi ) they're trying to determine why Prado took off.

Authorities say a woman in the vehicle with Prado was seriously hurt in the crash. She's hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
