WACO, Texas (AP) — President Barack Obama will consider signing a bill to rename the Waco Veterans Affairs Medical Center for World War II hero Doris Miller.

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday approved the measure honoring Miller, a Waco native and the first black American to receive the Navy Cross. The House approved the bill earlier this year.

Petty Officer Miller was a mess attendant and boxing champion aboard the USS West Virginia in 1941. Miller, known in the Navy as "Dorie," jumped into combat action when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Texan manned an unattended machine gun and also helped rescue scores of shipmates.

Miller died in action in 1943.
