Suspicious Package in San Angelo Shopping Center
The businesses in and adjacent to The Commons Shopping Center at Sherwood Way and Arden Road were inaccessible for about 3½ hours Tuesday as law enforcement officials investigated a suspicious package left in the parking lot.
A report of the package, a hard-shelled plastic container, was received at 8:26 a.m. A 300-foot safety perimeter was established about 9:30 a.m. A bomb-sniffing dog from Goodfellow Air Force Base and the Abilene Police Department’s bomb squad, the closest such operation to San Angelo, were summoned. An investigation found no explosives.
“We greatly appreciate the cooperation of all of the businesses, their employees and customers,” Fire Marshal Ross Coleman said. “While we hated having to disrupt those businesses, we have no choice but to take any report of a suspicious package seriously. In the wake of recent events in Boston and West, Texas, it’s a simple matter of protecting the public.”
The case remains under investigation by the City of San Angelo Fire Marshal’s Office. The San Angelo Police Department, San Angelo Fire Department and the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
