MISSION, Texas (AP) — The teenager who authorities say was fleeing from a state trooper when his vehicle slammed into an SUV, killing six people, was out on bail after being arrested a week earlier.

Hector Ramirez of the South Texas border town of Roma attempted to cross into Mexico in a stolen vehicle Aug. 5. Customs officers also found him in possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Hidalgo County jail on a $25,000 bond and later released.

Authorities say a week later the 18-year-old was fleeing from the trooper northwest of Mission in another stolen vehicle when it slammed into the SUV at an intersection. Six members of the same family riding in the SUV on Monday were killed.

Officials say six murder counts are pending against the hospitalized Ramirez.
