Ty Coleman went to high school in Midland before deciding to go to College Station for his continued education. In two seasons playing baseball for Texas A&M Coleman appeared in nearly 70 games but decided his future would be brighter in Lubbock.

A wise choice.

Coleman has been the designated hitter in the Red Raiders first seven games and after a rough start, had an enormous week at home to bust out. For his efforts, Coleman was named both the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week.

The big week started on Tuesday against Dallas Baptist when he went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI, and then really exploded this weekend when he had three multi-hit games against Kent State, including going 5 for 9 with two doubles and two home runs in Sunday's doubleheader.

The biggest hit of the weekend was this three-run jimmy jack to get Texas Tech the lead back in the bottom of the seventh. The game-winning RBI would eventually lock in the sweep of Kent State.

In the early game of the doubleheader, Coleman pieced together a 15-pitch at-bat to eventually notch a double.

Overall, Coleman hit .471 with 11 RBI last week and had four RBI in two separate games. For the week, Coleman had a 1.441 OPS, scored six runs, and four of his eight hits went for extra bases. These are Coleman's first weekly honors from the Big 12.

Coleman's emergence could be a good sign that the Red Raiders bats are heating up after struggling to get things going in the final two games in Arlington. Jace Jung needs somebody hitting behind him to prevent him from getting exclusively junk balls, which has been the case for the majority of the early season. Though, Jung did get his first home run of the season on Sunday.
