GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A $4.8 million beach restoration project will begin in Galveston that's expected to take a year to complete.

Workers on Monday are scheduled to begin adding new sand along a 10-mile stretch extending past the Galveston seawall.

The Houston Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1tDCIeO ) the project will create new beaches by spring 2015 in an area that for decades hasn't had one. Another portion of beach will be restored using some 120,000 cubic yards of sand after being washed away six years ago by Hurricane Ike.

The project is being paid for by the city, the Texas General Land Office, the Galveston Park Board of Trustees and some condominium owners.

The project also aims to construct a large dune system, which is necessary due to the rapidly eroding nature of the area.
