SPRING, Texas (AP) — One suspect has been shot multiple times and a second fled after the men attempted to rob a Houston-area fast-food restaurant where two off-duty sheriff's deputies had stopped to eat.

Authorities say the suspect who was shot was in critical condition at a hospital following the robbery attempt early Monday morning at a Whataburger in Spring, north of Houston.

The deputies with the Harris County sheriff's office were eating with family and friends when the two masked suspects entered the restaurant.

One struck an employee and demanded cash from the registers.

Investigators say one of the deputies confronted the suspect and began firing because the man had his hand in a pocket, as if he were retrieving a weapon.

No other injuries were reported in the gunfire.
