Zhaire Smith's journey in the NBA hasn't started as well as he likely wanted it to.

In his first summer league experience, Zhaire Smith came away with a broken foot. During his recovery, he had an allergic reaction and nearly died. Smith lost 40 pounds and couldn't work out for months while he recovered from his brush with death.

By Christmas, in his rookie season, he was back on the basketball court, but still had a long road ahead. Injuries forced Smith into action in his rookie season. He started his first NBA game as a rookie with the Philadelphia 76ers on April 9th against the Miami Heat. He played 30 minutes and scored 11 points, while occasionally matching up against future hall of farmer Dwayne Wade. Zhaire followed that up with 17 points in Philly’s season finale.

In his second season with the 76ers, Smith spent most of the season with the team's G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. He did play seven games for the NBA squad, but did not join the team in the bubble.

Heading into his third NBA season, Smith is now headed for a change of scenery, as reported by NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski:

Hoopsrumors.com makes the note that the Pistons will likely waive Smith and only made the move to clear Tony Bradley off their roster. It might be best if the Pistons do indeed waive Smith, especially if they don't have clear plans to revive Smith's career in Detroit.

If Smith can get into free agency, he'll have a much better opportunity to sign with somebody who believes in his ability to perform at the NBA level.
