Standoff Ends With Police Shooting Man Armed With Machete
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — An Austin police officer has shot and wounded a man armed with a machete to end a two-hour standoff in a neighborhood.
Police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-seh-VAY'-doh) says the suspect was hospitalized in stable condition following the shooting before dawn Tuesday.
Acevedo says the suspect called 911 to say he had a gun and a machete and was waiting for officers. Police located the man and negotiators began speaking with him.
Relatives told police that the suspect was distraught over a breakup with a girlfriend. Acevedo says suspect appeared to want officers to shoot him by falsely claiming to have a gun. The suspect was shot when he raised his arm holding the machete.
Acevedo didn't release the suspect's name.
The officer has been put on administrative leave with pay.
