The UIL State tournaments were canceled shortly after the NCAA started canceling spring events. Then came baseball, softball, and every other spring sport or event scheduled to take place in the last two months.

Now, after Governor Abbott's announcement that Texas will be moving into phase two of reopening, the UIL has sent word to coaches that limited offseason workouts and marching band practice can begin on June 8th. Abbott's provision for the UIL move hinges on Governor Abbott saying that sporting and camp activities are available to open May 31st and are required to adhere to special safety standards, and minimum standard health protocols have been established for all newly-announced opened services and activities.

The initial announcement was sent to athletic directors and coaches with the announcement that details will follow soon.

What this will look like is unclear as of now, but it's a strong sign that UIL and LISD are on track to hold normal activities in the Fall, with football, volleyball and cross country getting underway potentially on June 8th with offseason strength and conditioning.

Lubbock High has already reached out to band members setting up times to pick up instruments. The drum majors and section leaders will also be calling band members to start preparing for the coming practice.

Local coaches are also excited about the developments with coach Cluley from Estacado showing his excitement on twitter.
