A major study of youth concussions is slated to begin this week here in Texas, to better track brain injuries in children. The University Interscholastic League, Texas’ governing body for public high school sports, is partnering with the O’Donnell Brain Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas to develop a national database of brain injuries of high school athletes.

The study will closely look at whether recent rules and equipment changes are actually improving player safety, as well as what more can be done to protect student athletes.

The study will include some two dozen different high school sports, ranging from soccer to football.

According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control, about 4 million concussions happen in sports and recreational activities every year.
